5140 alloy structural steel heat treatment process

Annealing: 5140 alloy structural steel usually adopts full annealing or spheroidizing annealing.

The heating temperature of full annealing is generally 850-880℃.

After keeping warm for a period of time, it is slowly cooled to about 600℃ with the furnace and then air-cooled.

The purpose is to reduce the hardness, improve the cutting performance, and refine the grains and make the structure uniform.

Spheroidizing annealing is mainly used to improve the cutting performance of steel and prepare the structure for subsequent quenching.

The heating temperature is generally 760-780℃, and it is slowly cooled after keeping warm.

Quenching: The quenching temperature is generally around 830-860℃, and the specific temperature needs to be adjusted appropriately according to the size and shape of the mold.

The quenching medium can be oil or water.

For smaller molds, oil quenching can be used to reduce quenching deformation; for larger and more complex molds, water quenching and oil cooling can be used, that is, first cool in water for a period of time, and then cool in oil, so that the hardness after quenching can be guaranteed and quenching deformation can be reduced.

Tempering: The tempering temperature of 5140 alloy structural steel after quenching is generally around 500-650℃, and the hardness after tempering is usually around 25-35 HRC.

The purpose of tempering is to eliminate quenching stress, stabilize the organization, and obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties, such as the balance of strength, toughness and hardness.
