The main differences between the two are corrosion resistance and workability.

Because SUS316L has less carbon content, it has lower hardness after annealing and has good machinability.

In addition, SUS316L has better corrosion resistance than SUS316 steel plate because SUS316 is easier to sensitize.

Sensitization occurs when the heat generated during heat treatment or welding combines carbon and chromium in the material, resulting in a decrease in chromium content.

Normally, chromium undergoes an oxidation reaction to form a non-dynamic film to prevent corrosion.

When chromium combines with carbon, it precipitates chromium carbides, making the material more susceptible to corrosion.

SUS316L has a low carbon content, so carbon is not easily combined with chromium and chromium carbide will not precipitate, so the possibility of reduced corrosion resistance is small.

SUS316 steel plate also has good corrosion resistance, but SUS316L has better corrosion resistance.
