**Chemical composition and performance correlation**

- **Carbon (C) content**: DIN 1.2842 round bar contains a high carbon element, and the carbon content is generally between 1.0-1.1%.

The high carbon content enables the steel to obtain a high hardness after quenching and tempering, and the hardness can reach 60-64HRC.

This is because carbon forms a large number of carbides in the steel, which are dispersed in the matrix of the steel, effectively improving the hardness and wear resistance of the steel.

**Heat treatment characteristics**

- **Quenching**: Quenching is the key heat treatment process for DIN 1.2842 round bar to obtain high hardness.

The quenching temperature is generally between 800 - 830°C.

During the quenching process, it is important to note that the heating speed should not be too fast to avoid excessive thermal stress.

Preheating is usually required, and the preheating temperature can be selected between 600 - 650°C.

The quenching cooling medium is generally oil-cooled, which can achieve a better quenching effect and avoid quenching cracks caused by too fast cooling speed.

After quenching, the structure of the steel round bar is mainly martensite, which has a high hardness but also has large internal stress.
