cr12w tool steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-working tool steel with excellent wear resistance and high hardness.

it is suitable for manufacturing cold-working dies, cold punching and shearing tools, etc.

the following are its typical heat treatment process steps and precautions:

1 - annealing treatment

purpose: reduce hardness and improve cutting performance.

process parameters:

- heating temperature: 800°c~850°c;

- holding time: according to the size of the workpiece, keep warm for about 1 hour for every 10mm thickness;

- cooling method: slowly cool to below 500°c with the furnace, and then air cool.

- effect: hardness can be reduced to ≤255hbw.

2 - normalizing (selective)

purpose: refine the structure and provide good mechanical properties for subsequent processing.

process parameters:

- heating temperature: 880°c~920°c;

- holding time: keep warm for about 1 hour for every 10mm thickness;

- cooling method: air cooling.

3 - quenching treatment

purpose: to obtain high hardness and wear resistance.

- process parameters:

- heating temperature: 960°c~1000°c (980°c is generally recommended);

- heating method: graded heating to avoid cracking and deformation;

- insulation time: according to the thickness of the workpiece, 10~15 minutes for every 10mm thickness;

- cooling method: oil cooling or air cooling (for workpieces with complex shapes, air cooling is recommended to reduce deformation).

performance after heat treatment

- hardness: 58~64hrc after quenching + tempering;

- wear resistance: excellent, suitable for high wear conditions;

- dimensional stability: the performance is more stable after cold treatment.
